The Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) was formed in 2001 and was made up of only four teams. Since that time, the OIWFA has developed and grown into a strong and sustainable self-governed league with 13 member teams and over 200 student-athletes each year.
The OIWFA season runs for six consecutive weeks from mid-September to the end of October. A 20-game regular season is capped off with the top eight teams competing at a Provincial Championship weekend. The top teams at the Provincial Championships also qualify annually for the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association (CCSA) National Championships.
The OIWFA has undertaken many initiatives to draw attention to the league that we have proudly developed. The OIWFA provides live online streaming of our Provincial Championships, which annually receive thousands of views.
In 2012, the OIWFA was featured on the Rick Mercer Report, and also became the first Canadian university sport to partner with the You Can Play Project and take a united, league-wide stance against homophobia in sport. In 2015, the OIWFA became the first university sport to partner with the Student-Athlete Mental Health Initiative (SAMHI).
